The 2014 NFL Scouting Combine is set to begin in just a couple of days, as the NFL converges upon Indianapolis in an attempt to learn more about the prospects eligible for the NFL Draft.

There will be a monsoon of media covering the event between now and its conclusion, with talking heads telling you who did well and who hurt their stock.  It’s truly one of the great parts of Draft season.  But do you really understand, or know, what a “good” performance on any of the drills are?

Below is a breakdown of each drill and what a NFL prospect should be targeting as a minimum result.  Each position carries its own set of “minimums” that have been created to mirror the on-field requirements of that particular spot.  It’s not an exact science, but it certainly helps give the evaluator a tangible number to work with.  By using this breakdown of “minimums,” you’ll be able to gauge how well a player did by how much they exceeded (or were faster than) the minimum time.  It’s also good practice to compare a player’s performance versus everyone else; As players get bigger/stronger/faster, the below numbers are subject to change (i.e., what’s considered ‘fast’ might soon be ‘slow.’)
