The 2015 NFL Mock Draft season is in full swing, with some analysts going so far as to post seven rounds of picks! I bow to them, as it’s an endeavor that gives me the shakes. That said, and since I am the defending Huddle Report Mock Draft Champion, it’s time that I publish my first complete, first-round mock. Without further delay…
2015 NFL Mock Draft, Round 1
The pick: Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon
The Reason: It’s no secret that Tampa needs a quarterback, as neither Josh McCown or Mike Glennon is the answer. In addition, they need a “face of the franchise.” And when you’re picking first overall, the selection’s value is maximized when you can bring in a quarterback with the potential to be a franchise player. Mariota doesn’t have the “golden arm,” but he does have just about everything else. He’s a very good athlete whose highly intelligent and squeaky clean (character-wise.) Sure, he played in a spread offense and sure, sometimes his arm strength leaves a bit to be desired. But his overall body of work suggests he will be at least a competent and capable starting NFL quarterback. And, as many teams have learned the hard way, those players are hard to come by.
