Hike in Minimum Wage Allowances Curbed by Delhi Government

The Delhi government on 24 October 2021 conducted a joint meeting with top officials to increase the minimum wages, however, this annual plan faced a setback due to a surge in the inflation scale. This majorly affected at least 50 lakh workers in Delhi. The increase in inflation of essential items, termed as “supply shocks” served to be a hindrance for the impartation of the Dearness Allowance (DA). However, full-fledged jobs in Delhi were a burning hub for workers to earn the daily bread and sustain in the metropolitan setup. The DA proved to be a stick to the blind as it supported the lower income group at a larger scale.

Despite having a job at a construction site, the workers have to pick a job under employers or officials for an additional income to support their family. Ram Kripal, a 32-year-old construction worker, averred to the Scroll (news agency) that, “It’s a daily routine here.” For him it’s a daily routine where he is bound to search for different jobs to earn a living as a daily wage labourer. As per the statistics, the quantity of people left behind with no work or negligible pay witnessed a surge after the introduction of demonetisation. 2,000 to 3,000 daily wage workers who earlier had employment in the pre-demonetisation period have dipped to 1,000 employed workers.
